Task 1 : Identification of peripherals (PC 1.1)
1) Write 1-2 sentences stating in your own words what a computer peripheral is.
2) Using the Internet find one graphic, make, model, New Zealand supplier and price for the following computer peripherals:
a) One input device (eg mouse, keyboard)
b) One output device (eg visual display unit/monitor)
c) One inkjet or lazer printer available
d) One storage device (eg pen drive)
e) One data projector
f) One digital, web or video camera
g) One microphone or speakers
h) One scanning device
Task 2 : Explanation of how each peripheral performs its functions (PC1.2)
In terminology that will be understood by a Year 10 student, explain what each of the above peripherals does and how they work. An appropriate, labelled graphic may be included, e.g.
Function: Keyboards allow a computer user to input words, numbers and symbols into a computer processing unit. They also allow the user to access computer menus.
Examples of Uses: Keying alphabetic symbols to create letters in MS Word; keying in numbers and text to create spreadsheets in MS Excel; updating a save (Ctrls) or accessing the shut-down window (Ctrl/Alt/Delete)
How a computer keyboard works:
7 Most keyboards have between 80 and 110 keys, including:
o Typing keys
o A numeric keypad
o Function keys
o Control keys
7 Underneath the keyboard cover is a matrix of switches and circuits.
7 Each key has its own switch.

Keyboards use these switches and circuits to change a person's keystrokes into a signal a computer can understand.
7 As a key is struck it presses down on the switch that sends a message along the circuit board to the computers processing unit
7 The processing unit identifies which switch sent the message and converts it to computer code. If two switches are struck, eg shift/a then the computer recognises both keys and modifies the code appropriately.
Task 3 : Computer Maintenance Products and Consumables (PC 3.1, 3.2)
Using the Internet find out the name, supplier and price of:
Ø Computer maintenance products that are recommended to:
o Remove dust from inside a computer systems unit
o Remove dirt and dust from computer screens and keyboards
o Clean a camera lens
o Clean a scanner copy plate/screen
Ø A replacement ink/toner cartridge for the printer you selected in Task 1.
Task 4 : Operating and Maintaining Personal Computer Peripherals Observation (PC 2.1, 2,2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2)
