Demonstrate an Understanding of the Materials and Processes of Music in a Range of Scores AS90269 version 2 - 2 Credits

This year students will study music theory. This is an ongoing process that will culminate an end of year external examination.

Assessed topics include identification, description, analysis or explanation of a range of the following:     
  •  Pitch and rhythm notation.
  •  Key signatures – up to four sharps and four flats, major/minor/modal tonalities.
  •  Harmony (diatonic chords in root position, first and second inversion, sus4 chords) in keys up to four sharps and four flats, using Roman numerals (eg I, V7, IVb) and jazz/rock terminology (eg C, G7, F/A) Students could be expected to realise short extracts of harmony eg cadences.
  •  Clefs – treble, bass, alto, tenor, percussion.
  •  Time signatures – commonly used simple, compound and irregular.
  •  Processes such as repetition, motif, imitation, sequence, variation or thematic development, modulation, texture.
  •  Characteristics of orchestration (instrumentation), including transposing instruments.
